Pharmaceutical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary area that encompasses the fields of chemistry, physics, biochemistry, biology, engineering and medicine. Research in this area is directed towards applying engineering principles and analysis methods to improve our ability to discover and produce new chemicals to treat human diseases. Pharmaceutical engineering is the process whereby engineering strategies and principles are applied to solve problems that exist at the interface between these disciplines.
Current research interests:
- We are interested in applying rational design methods to guide the synthesize and biological profiling of new compounds targeted at neglected diseases, including anti-microbials, anti-cancer and anti-malarial agents.
- We are involved in the application of biostatistical methods for the analysis of the properties of drugs, clinical candidates and pre-clinical compounds. Such analyzes can help us to identify the types of molecules that have a greater probability of success for a given disease.
- We are interested in the harnessing of polymer materials and electronic engineering understanding to develop efficient, cost effective and accurate biosensors to monitor for pesticides in the environment or other specific chemicals in biological samples.
- Use of computational models to predict Adsorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMET) characteristics of new molecules.
